Analysis of the match between Coventry City and Middlesbrough
Coventry City F.C. have been absent from the Premier League for 25 years, but the prospect of a return is now clearer than ever. The Sky Blues currently sit second in the EFL Championship, just two points behind leaders Middlesbrough F.C.. However, their recent form has been unconvincing, with only one point collected from the last three matches.
In their most recent outing, Frank Lampard’s men were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Oxford United F.C., a side currently in the lower half of the table. Coventry arguably deserved all three points, registering an expected goals (xG) figure of 2.29 compared to their opponent’s 0.11. Poor finishing, though, forced them to settle for a draw, denting their confidence ahead of a crucial six-pointer.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough are edging closer to a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017. For much of the season they trailed Coventry, but after the latest round the two sides swapped positions. The visitors are in outstanding form, having won five matches in a row, including a 2-1 away victory over Sheffield United F.C..
Although they did not completely dominate that match, Middlesbrough showed composure to secure another vital win. They now head into what could be the defining fixture of their season. A victory at Coventry would almost secure their promotion to the Premier League.
